HEAT UP THE CLASSIC
The Colt Commando series first appeared in the 1960s. In 1984, Colt developed a series of new short barrel Commando assault rifles based on the M16A2. The Model 733 was one of these models.
The new version of the Commando series initially introduced the M733 and M735 models, which are shortened versions of the 720/723/727 series M16A2 carbines. The M733 used the A1-type fire selector system, i.e., safe-semi-auto (S-1-F). The early M733 used an A1-Upper Receiver which was later changed to an A2-Upper Receiver.
Colt's Commando series used 11.5-inch barrels on all models, but the M733 had only the M16A2-type muzzle flash suppressor mounted, so the muzzle blast and flash in the firefight were a huge nuisance to the shooter. However, its compact size makes it ideal for CQB environments and it is still used by some SWAT teams in the United States. It is also used by the Israeli Defense Forces and French Special Forces.
However, the M733 became famous mostly because of the 1995 Hollywood movie "Heat", in which the characters use the M733 during the bank robbery and the subsequent shootout with the police, This shootout is still one of the best movie shootouts in history.
